Dr. Burgess graduated cum laude from Azusa Pacific University with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Health – Physical Therapy, all while playing 4 years of collegiate basketball at the same institution. He then went on to receive his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree over the next 3 years from Azusa Pacific University as well.
Upon graduating as one of the top students in his class, Dr. Burgess was accepted into Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s highly competitive Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency program. During this year long advanced training, Dr. Burgess participated in 1-on-1 clinical mentoring from some of the nation’s top physical therapists, conducted research, participated in over 500 hours of advanced continuing education covering clinical reasoning, upper and lower quadrant biomechanical examination and treatment, upper and lower quadrant physical examination and manual treatment procedures, and the scientific basis of orthopedic physical therapy clinical practice, all while working as a staff physical therapist responsible for the evaluation, screening, treatment, and comprehensive management of a variety of Orthopedic patients of all ages. Upon completion of the residency, Dr. Burgess became a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
The following year, Dr. Burgess was accepted into Kaiser Permanente Southern California’s prestigious Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy Fellowship program, where he spent another year learning from some of the best in the field. The program allowed him to work 1-on-1 for over 200 hours with an Orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, mentor current Orthopedic physical therapy residents, conduct further research, as well as participate in over 30 weekend courses consisting of advanced training related to clinical reasoning, movement analysis, motor learning, return to sport, manual examination and treatment, and pain science of the orthopedic and sports populations. This advanced training allowed him to become an expert in musculoskeletal conditions both related to the general and athletic populations.
Along with his extensive physical therapy background, Dr. Burgess is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, which qualifies him to help athletes of any age to develop and achieve higher level performance based goals that extend beyond traditional rehabilitation.
Dr. Burgess makes it his mission to help others understand how their bodies work and what they can do to reduce pain, improve mobility, overcome weakness, recover from nagging or new injuries, and to identify and overcome any obstacles that stand in the way of achieving their goals, however large or small. He strongly believes in empowering individuals to take control of their pain and functional limitations in order to return to and EXCEL in the activities they love.
In his free time, Dr. Burgess enjoys traveling to new places with his wife, Angie, sampling new foods with his friends and family, and meeting new people whenever the opportunity arises.
